I think the popularity of a story tends to be proportional to the number of fan fantasies it fulfils. This accounts for the popularity of stories in which a teenage American girl suddenly manifests in the canon location, for example, whether Rivendell, the Opera Populaire or Hogwarts...

It also explains the popularity of POTO stories in which Christine Sees the Error of Her Ways and makes poor Erik happy after all :-p
