I'm not a fan of Westerns in general. I can't put my finger on why, but something about the genre just doesn't do it for me. Red River tried its best to surpass my expectations, but sadly did not succeed.
The first half of the movie is decent, with some fine performances from John Wayne, Montgomery Clift, and Walter Brennan, but the second half fails to live up to it. Things that were set up in the beginning were never paid off, and the conflict between Wayne's and Clift's characters didn't really get a chance to be resolved. It left me feeling a little disappointed.
Red River is a good movie. It could have been a great movie, had the shoehorned romantic subplot and anticlimactic ending not spoiled it. Would I watch it again? Maybe. Would I recommend it to other people? Yes, but I'd tell them not to get their hopes up too much.
Rating: 3/5 stars.
